The Stand
October 27, 2010
When I was growing up, my grandparents had a produce farm in Myerstown, PA and made their living, in part, through a roadside stand, just over the creek, where regulars and passerbys would stop to buy everything from geraniums to tomatoes to cantaloupes. I used to love to “tend the stand”, as we called it. Sometimes we would be busy, and sometimes it would be hours between customers. The Stand had a sweet greenhouse smell and a strangely comforting grittiness that I loved.
I think that is why I love Heider’s roadside market — especially this time of year. On nearly all my trips back home from Pennsylvania, just north of Leesburg on Rt. 15, my car just turns uncontrollably into Heider’s parking lot. On any given day, one can choose from mums to green tomatoes to okra. There is always fresh Apple Cider and the last time I stopped, the Apple Pie was still warm.
I haven’t found a Northern Virginia road side stand yet that matches Heiders.
